Hello, sisters, brothers, and others! Welcome to the Traveling Magpie Boutique blog. I’m Mani, the owner of TMB, and I’m so excited about the new directions I’m taking in my life, and right in time for the beginning of a New Year!
I have already brainstormed a list of dozens of topics I plan to cover in this space, but I have a confession to make; I felt absolutely frozen as I stared at the blank screen in front of me, trying to start this post.
I’ve written a lot of blog posts over the years. Thousands upon thousands, on all sorts of different blogs. And yet, the first post on any new blog is always difficult for me. With this blog, I had the desire to use this post as a sort of friendly introduction, without making it a repetition of the About page.
Because this is a fashion/lifestyle blog, many of the topics won’t be big shockers to you. Clothes, shoes, and accessories for grown-ups and little people alike, interior design and home decor, and the vague and loosely defined, ‘Life Objects’ where you’ll find things like stationary, bicycles, and headphones. You’ll also get your fill of artsy-craftsy things to do and make.
My style preferences are eclectic, and since I’m the one choosing what to feature in this space, the blog will be a mashup, too. You’ll find andro chic, librarian sensibility, bohemian sex goddess, and 90s grunge with a biker edge. You’ll find help deciding what to wear to your cousin’s wedding, the perfect first date attire, close-the-deal-with-that-client blazers and eyewear, plus stylin’ sweats for cozy days at home.
The subject matter is common, but it is my hope that the manner in which these topics are covered is anything but common. So let’s talk about that. Writers, and bloggers in particular, are oftentimes encouraged to simplify their writing in utterly ridiculous ways. I believe the industry standard is to keep your writing at a fifth-grade level. This would be fine advice if I were writing for fifth-graders, but I’m not. I am writing for you, dear reader, and I happen to believe that just because you’ve got a passion for fashion doesn’t mean that you’re stupid. I believe that it is not only possible, but entirely likely, that you are able to both care about your appearance and handle multisyllabic words.
It’s also important to note that if you want to find tips for starving yourself, articles that encourage disordered eating and body image, or body shaming, this ain’t the place (though I do hope you’ll choose to hang here instead, where you can celebrate your beautiful bod no matter your weight). It’s a game that no one ever wins. In the worst case scenarios it leads to death, and in far too many more, it leads to lives filled with self-loathing and devoid of the many pleasures life has to offer.
If an intelligent fashion/lifestyle blog with a strong feminist streak is what you’ve been looking for, welcome. If you’ve wanted a place for your children, and let’s be real, yourself, to shop for clothing and accessories without being bombarded by unhealthy and unrealistic beauty standards, you’ve found your place. If you think labels are for cans, not for genders, and you’ve dreamed of a blog that celebrates style while encouraging self-love, you are home. Let’s do this.
Sometimes I swear. A lot.
